Wimbledon Going For Gold

What’s On

The first ever Wimbledon Sports Week came to Wimbledon in the Ocotber 26-30th, 2009 half term.  There were plenty of sporting activities and displays taking place at the Wimbledon Station forecourt and on The Piazza throughout the whole week, and a postcard competition to win one of our fantastic sports related prizes.

There were plenty of sporting activities to choose from - football, tennis, cricket, martial arts, rugby, cycling and more.  Wimbledon Sports Week was organised by Wimbledon Town Centre Management and championed by AFC Wimbledon, and was part of the Wimbledon Going for Gold campaign, launched in March 2009.

The entire week was devised to bring the wide variety of sporting activities available in Wimbledon and the surrounding area into one focused week of sporting fun for all ages.

AFC Wimbledon were at the Station forecourt every day during the week when visitors came to try some football challenges with the AFC coaches.  Wednesday 28th October was designated as "Ladies Day" when the focus was on ladies' sports and health.

All England Lawn Tennis Club were at the Station where coaching tips from Wimbledon Tennis coaches was available for all.

Surrey Cricket were offering coaching and there was also Martial Arts demos and fitness training during the week.

Over on the Piazza visitors could see Goals, Wimbledon Rugby, Cassar Academy, YMCA, GLL, Kimberley Rothman Fitcamp, AKIDO and more.  The Met Police were on hand every day at the Piazza to do security cycle marking, in association with Pedal 4 Health and Merton Cycling.

The postcard competition prizes included Premiership Tickets, AELTC and AFC Merchandise, a children's party at Goals, signed Surrey Cricket bat, memberships, classes and other fabulous prizes from our sponsors - Thomas Cook Sports, AFC Wimbledon, Goals, YMCA, British Martial Arts, Surrey Cricket, AELTC, Cassar Academy, Golf Bidder, Kim Rothman & Wimbledon Leisure.

Sports Week will be back in 2010.  Contact Lynda Reynolds on 020 8944 5501 for details.

With thanks to all our sponsors who took part in Sports Week
